Stourport Canal Basins Volunteer Programme
Things volunteers might like to know
Age
We apply a minimum age limit of 16. If you are under the age of 16 and would like to get involved in the restoration project then please contact us as we can discuss alternative ways of involvement.
Breaks
There will be regular intervals throughout the day for volunteers to take breaks. This will be arranged and agreed between the volunteer programme organiser, the task supervisor and the volunteers throughout the task.
Equal Opportunities
All volunteers are covered by the British Waterways Equal Opportunities Policy.
Expenses
Expenses can be claimed to cover reasonable travel to and from the place of volunteering. We pay volunteer mileage at 40p per mile. Unfortunately due to budget limitations volunteer travel expenses are limited to 20 miles (round trip) or the equivalent cost for public transport (£8.00).
Only actual expenses will be paid and evidence of expenditure i.e. receipts will be required prior to incurring.
Facilities
There are toilet facilities on site and a kitchen which will be made available to volunteers.
Health and Safety
All volunteers will be covered by British Waterways Health and Safety Policy. You will be asked to read the joint BW/WRG booklet Volunteers Working Safely prior to any work carried out.
Each task has been Risk Assessed by British Waterways Staff. A copy can be supplied if requested by volunteer.
Each volunteer will be informed of all Health and Safety procedures relevant to the task during the initial induction.
Induction
Volunteers will receive an induction into British Waterways and the specific task which is to be carried out.
Insurance
All volunteers working on behalf of and for British Waterways will be insured.
Other Volunteers
All volunteers carrying out task with British Waterways will be expected to work along with and respect other British Waterways volunteers.
Resources
British Waterways will provide volunteers with all the necessary equipment needed to carry out each task.
Supervision
The level of supervision required for volunteers will be dependant on the task. There will be constant supervision for volunteers carrying out task with a reasonable level of risk i.e. practical tasks on site near water.
British Waterways will discuss the level of supervision for each individual volunteer needs dependant on the task being carried out.
Support
British Waterways will give support to all volunteers throughout the task offering constant feedback on their progress where necessary.
Training
Training will be provided to equip all volunteers with the specific skills and knowledge to carry out each task to the standard required by British Waterways.
Workwear
Volunteers will be required to provide their own footwear to carry out volunteer tasks. Due to the nature of the site sturdy work boots are recommended.
