Stourport Canal Basins Volunteer Programme

Welcome to the Stourport Canal Basins Restoration Project and thank you for expressing an interest in the Volunteer Programme. We hope this page will provide detailed information about our Volunteer Programme and the opportunities there are for people to get involved restoring this unique heritage setting.

The opportunities we have available provide for the different reasons people chose to give up their time as well as the different abilities, skills and time commitments people are able to offer. We would like to draw on the strengths of existing community involvement but also create enjoyable opportunities and experiences for those not already involved in the project and with limited or no experience in volunteering.

The Stourport Canal Basins Restoration Volunteer Programme is open to anyone who would like to contribute and get involved with the restoration. Within the programme there are practical, administration, events, photography, information and research tasks and you are welcome to get involved in as many or as few of these as you wish.
The variety of tasks within the Volunteer Programme will not only allow people to contribute to the physical changes of Stourport Canal Basins but also provide opportunities to enhance the social and cultural role of the site.

Volunteer Information
The Stourport Canal Basins restoration can benefit hugely from assistance and involvement of volunteers. The volunteer programme also offers people the opportunity to carry out a wide variety of tasks which can help them gain valuable skills and experiences.

What opportunities are there?
The volunteer tasks range from the practical; which include jobs like repairing and re-pointing historic brick walls and the non-practical; which includes support to the restoration team with events, research and office work.
Detailed volunteer task descriptions are included in this pack. Read on for further details.

Why get involved?
Volunteering on one of the many tasks is a great way to keep active, meet like minded people, have fun in the fresh air whilst learning new skills. Each task provides invaluable experience which can be included on your CV and assist if looking for employment.

The Volunteer Programme also offers a great chance for you to get involved in a unique heritage setting and make a tangible difference to your local area. In addition, the nature of the tasks can help motivate you to keep fit whilst discovering new places.

Where?
The majority of the volunteer opportunities take place at Stourport Canal Basins. However, there is a small number of tasks which can be carried out in your own home.

Who?
Volunteers of all abilities are welcome on the Volunteer Programme, however volunteers with limited mobility may find it difficult to carry out some of the practical tasks.
Due to the varied nature of the tasks British Waterways may require an informal discussion with potential volunteers to assess their suitability for a certain tasks.
For the majority of our tasks we apply a minimum age limit of 16 (18 for some opportunities) due to insurance purposes.

Skills?
No previous experience or specific skills are needed as full training and instructions will be given. All we ask is that you are enthusiastic and willing to work hard and get your hands dirty!

Previous Volunteer Events:
Volunteer Open Day
Sunday 19th August 2007
10am – 3pm
On a cold and wet Sunday in August local people came along to the basins to find out what opportunities there are for them to get involved in the restoration of Stourport Canal Basins. People spent the day chatting to British Waterways staff about the specific tasks they can do to help out with the project and some of the willing visitors volunteered to help out on the day by clearing the built up vegetation on a dry sand stone wall situated in the lower basin area. All participants of the vegetation clearance task were given the necessary equipment and an induction which included a Health and Safety briefing and clear instructions on how to carry out the task. After a good few hours pulling out the vegetation from all the nooks and cracks in the wall, the volunteers stood back to admire their hard work and effort with a vegetation free wall. This sand stone wall was cleared to prepare for it to be repaired and re-pointed. This repair and re-pointing work will be carried out by volunteers. If this sounds like something you would like to get involved in you will find further details on this event below.
