Throughout August 2007 many children and their parents brought along a picnic to Stourport Canal Basins to enjoy the afternoon at this beautiful historic canal and riverside location. British Waterways organised a series of children’s activities and events every Wednesday to trial the Canal Basins site as a potential venue to hold regular outdoor events.
The Pied Piper
Bangers and Mash Theatre Company entertained the children and parents alike as they sat out on the basin green to see the Pied Piper get rid of all the rats in Hamlin. Over 100 people came along to the canal basins to watch the performance and many had such a good time they returned to take part in the rest of the activities during the summer.
Pirates Treasure Hunt
The basins were temporarily taken over by pirates on day when over 100 children turned up to try and find the hidden treasure of the canal basins. All the pirates were told about the legend of the hidden treasure and given a map to help them find the secret code so they could get past the pirates on the island and claim the treasure.

Scavenger Hunt
Many children turned up to enter the Scavenger Hunt and find as many correct answers to the scavenger hunt questions as possible. All the questions were about Stourport Canal Basins and the answer could be found by searching around the whole of the Canal Basins site. The winner of the hunt was Robert Griffiths of Stourport who answered the most questions correctly.
George and the Dragon / Teddy Bears Picnic
Unfortunately the original performance of George and the Dragon had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions but we were able to get Bangers and Mash Theatre Company back to perform the show during the Teddy Bears Picnic event. The weather was much better for the picnic and many children arrived with their teddy bears in tow and sat out on the green with their picnics while they watched the enchanting George and the Dragon performance.
