John Bolton is embarking on researching and writing an account of Stourport's history and is asking for your contributions. 'It would be wonderful if people would be willing to share their own personal histories of growing up and living in the town. There is no limit to what I'd love to see! After all, every photo ever taken in Stourport has something to say about its history, and I'm confident there are people living in Stourport who could add something incredible to my research. I'm sure many families in the town have ancestors who lived there too, and it would be lovely to hear about them.'

'In addition to a history of the town, I'm also very interested in hearing any local ghost stories people may have: this was originally only going to be a small part of my research, but already the subject has gained such momentum that ghost stories may become a central focus of the book. Indeed, I'm hoping that as I collate these stories, I may be able to explore how historic figures and events in the town connect to them.'

'My appeal, therefore, is simply this: to anyone who has a story to tell (and we all do, don't we?), please get in touch. I'm hoping that people will be willing to send me photos or memories of the town, or even to allow me to interview them. I'd love to add a personal flavour to my research - much less dry than the old newspapers and parish records I'll inevitably have to wade through! Naturally, anyone willing to help me in my research will be fully credited in the book. I won't divulge any personal information if I'm asked not to, and I will only include images with the express permission of the owners. In respect of ghost stories, I understand that such things can be difficult for people to talk about, and I will absolutely be sensitive to that, and I can promise my discretion.'

Anyone who would like to contact John with stories, photos, or to talk about their experiences/memories, can reach him via the Facebook group - http://www.facebook.com/historystourport - or by email - historystourport@gmail.com.

Visitors will also be able to experience canal boat trips, a series of historic guided walks, a historic working boat and heritage rooms.

The activities, which are part of the Stourport Basins Heritage Weekend, will operate from 12 noon to 4pm on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May. Please note that there will be no first aid on site and all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Visitors will be able to explore Stourport’s newly completed heritage room at Bridge Street and view the exhibits loaned by Bewdley Museum and displays created by Stourport Civic Society, to discover more about life at Stourport in times past including some of the shops and trades that used to be part of the town.

The project has been made possible with support from Wyre Forest District Council, Bewdley Museum, Bewdley Tourist Information Centre and Stourport Civic Society. The building, which is currently owned by Wyre Forest District Council, has been vacant for some time and is part of a proposed mixed use development site. Wyre Forest District Council agreed to allow Stourport Forward to operate a Heritage Room during Summer 2011, whilst the building is vacant.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy the only opportunity this year to take to the water on the canal trip boat, “Dreamcatcher”, which will be leaving the canal basins at 12.30 pm, 2.00pm and 3.30pm for a canal trip of just under an hour. Tickets, £5.00 (adults) and £3.00 (children/concessions) can be reserved on 01299 822827 or purchased on the boat (space permitting).

On Sunday 14th May only, there will be four Heritage walks run by “Wyre Forest Best Foot Forward” to improve knowledge of the history of the Basins and promote the benefits of “Health Walking.”  The project is part of a health initiative delivered by Wyre Forest District Council.  Details about other walks can be found at www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/walk .

The first walk, Stourport Town History Trail, will be around  2 miles and will start from Stourport Civic Centre at 10.00 am and last for approximately 1.5 hours .

Two identical Stourport Basin History Trail Walks, will last around 1 hour each and will start from the Tontine Stable Heritage Room at 12 noon and  2 pm and will explore key sites around the basins.

A final walk, of approximately 4 miles, the Baldwin History Trail, will start from the Tontine Garden at 3pm and last for around 3  hours exploring key sites within the town and  the village of Wilden that relate to the industrial development of the district.

Please meet approximately 10 minutes before each walk starts. Further details are available from: Geoff Shaw, Best Foot Forward, 07540672752.

British Waterways volunteers will also be on hand to show visitors around the tiny living quarters of the visiting heritage work boat ‘Scorpio’ to learn what it was like to live and work on a canal boat. Visitors can also discover more about the growth of the canal basins at the Tontine Stable Heritage Room and some of the trades that grew as a result of the arrival of the canal at the Old Ticket Office.

Stourport Forward Chair, Pauline Annis, said “The Heritage Weekend is a fantastic opportunity to discover more about the history of Stourport through the new and existing heritage rooms, canal boat trips, guided walks and the heritage working boat.

“We are delighted to open this new temporary heritage room, Discover Stourport, at Bridge Street and would like to thank all the partners and especially the team of  volunteers who have worked so hard to make it possible. We look forward to welcoming visitors at the weekend event to share and celebrate the history of our town.

“The Heritage Room opening times will gradually be extended with the growing support of our dedicated team of volunteers, continuing to offer a truly interactive heritage experience. In order to staff the room this summer we do need more volunteers. Anyone who would like to find out more about volunteering should contact Liz Sheerin, 01299 822827.”

Get involved with Stourport's future facilities

Stourport on Severn people can help to map out and consider the future of the town's public buildings and facilities by attending special 'focus group' meetings during the week commencing Monday 7th March.

One Focus Group will consider arts/theatre/ hall facilities and how these could be provided following the district council’s vacation of the Civic Centre in 2012. A second group will consider sports and leisure facilities and will compliment the Wyre Forest District Council Review of Sports and Leisure Services. The third Focus Group will be an opportunity for people to find out more about the Stourport Facilities Project and how they can become involved.

The get-togethers are the next stage of a project that is considering how to get the best use out of the town's public and community assets, which is being supported by Stourport Forward and other partners. The project will explore the potential for transferring assets into community ownership and identify possible buildings and facilities.

Community groups and local people have already helped the project's steering group, which is chaired by Councillor John Holden, to map out all of Stourport's civic facilities and community centres.

The Focus Groups provide an opportunity for anyone with an interest to see the progress so far and contribute to the next steps, which could include developing plans to change the way that local buildings and facilities are used or owned.

"We've made good progress towards making a comprehensive map of Stourport's current resources," said Pauline Annis, Chair of Stourport Forward. "We now need enthusiastic local people to help us to identify the best options for the future of the town."

Councillor John Holden, Chairman of the Steering Group, added, "Members of the public can be confident that party politics will not interfere with this project because there is a cross-party commitment to work together for the good of Stourport. This project has given us a great opportunity to work together to try to secure the best outcome for Stourport in the challenging times ahead. I hope to see plenty of people coming along to get involved with this exciting work."

The steering group includes members from all political groups on Stourport on Severn Town Council, together with district councillors and a county councillor. It is supported by officers from Wyre Forest District Council, Worcestershire County Council and Stourport Forward. Advisers from the government funded Asset Transfer Unit, which is led by the Development Trusts Association, the leading nationwide network of community enterprise organisations, will also be supporting the project to share their experience of other projects around the country

Details of the meeting times, venues and dates can be obtained from Wyn Jenkins on 07970570088 or wyn.jenkins@googlemail.com or Liz Sheerin on  01299 822827 or stourportforward@btconnect.com. Members of the public who can't make it to the meeting can still get involved by contacting Wyn or Liz.

From Coracles to Churches.
Celebrating Stourport’s Heritage.
 Saturday 11th and Sunday  12th September - 12 noon to 4pm

This weekend several historic venues in Stourport will be sharing and celebrating their history as part of the Stourport Heritage Weekend, providing a great opportunity for visitors and local people to find out more about the history of the town, the canal basins, St. Michael’s Church, Stourport Methodist Church and the Masonic Hall, Severn Road.

There will be a unique opportunity to see a coracle at Stourport Canal Basins on Sunday 12th September, between 12 noon and 4 pm. David Struckett, a local enthusiast who recently made the coracle, will demonstrate use of the coracle and will be available to talk about coracles on the Severn in times past.

On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September from 12 noon to 4 p.m. visitors to Stourport Canal Basins will be able to explore, “Scorpio”, a British Waterways Heritage Working Boat which will be moored at the basins. British Waterways volunteers will be available to talk about what it was like to live and work on a working canal boat in times past. Both the Old Ticket Office Heritage Room (in York Street) and the Tontine Stable Heritage Room (next to the Windlass Café/Restaurant) will be open and volunteers will be available to talk about the history of Stourport and the initial growth of the town as a historic working canal port. Visitors will also be able to follow “Brindley’s Brainwaves” heritage trail leaflet, produced by British Waterways.  Heritage costumed volunteer  “boat people” will be offering help to boats passing through the locks at York Street on Saturday afternoon. Please note that there is no first aid available at this event.

Stourport Masonic Hall, Severn Road, will open its doors to visitors between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday 12th September providing a rare opportunity to view a range of Masonic memorabilia covering the last 100 years of freemasonry. Visitors will also be offered a guided tour of the building.

Some of Stourport’s historic churches will also open their doors during the weekend and light refreshments will be available. St. Michael’s Church and graveyard, Church Drive, will both be open on Saturday and Sunday 11th & 12th from 12 noon  to 4 p.m. St. Michael’s is set in tranquil gardens within the walls of the previous church and has one of the largest graveyards in the country. There has been a church on the site since Saxon times. Volunteers will be available to talk about the history of the church and graveyard. Stourport Methodist Church, off Stourport High Street, will welcome visitors to the church and open their Oasis Coffee Bar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday only. John Wesley, the Founder of Methodism, preached here in 1788.  Come and see the unique Marble Pulpit and also, to show it is a church of today, the decorative glass doors depicting the life of Stourport.  All are welcome to worship at both churches on Sunday.

Liz Sheerin (Manager, Stourport Forward) said “Stourport has such a unique and fascinating history! This is a great opportunity to learn more about the growth of the canal port, the history of some of our local churches and to explore venues which are not normally accessible, for example, Stourport Masonic Hall.  By visiting and exploring these historic sites and talking to volunteers we can learn so much about the lives of the people who lived and worked in our town and helped to shape the development of Stourport to make it into the friendly, picturesque, historic Georgian town that it is today.”

Don't Miss - The highlight of Stourports year - the carnival on the first weekend of September - includes a big parade with floats and marching bands, an evening river carnival, plus a host of activities and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy over two days. All the usual Riverside Attractions will be open and visitors should watch out for pirates lurking at Playland, Treasure Island and The Showman Boat. The Holly Bush pub has warned that pirates may be behind the bar!

Barratts West Midlands, have kindly donated £250 towards the cost of the weekend and will have a pirate themed sales office, where families will be able to pick up their very own loot all for free! The Pirates Weekend has also been supported by the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) through Destination Worcestershire. HISTORIC ‘LADY HATHERTON, 1898’ CELEBRATES HER STOURPORT HERITAGE

Stourport’s newly completed canalside heritage rooms have attracted a special guest to visit Stourport Canal Basins in May when the historic waterway canal inspection boat ‘Lady Hatherton 1898’ returns to her original home base.

Launched in 1898 as the Committee Boat of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Company, ‘Lady Hatherton’ is now in private ownership and will moor at Stourport Canal Basins as the show piece attraction of the Stourport Canal Basins Heritage Weekend on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 May (12 noon to 4 p.m.) giving its seal of approval to the recently opened Canal Basins’ Heritage Rooms, which explore the history of Stourport Canal Basins as a working canal port.

‘Lady Hatherton’ underwent extensive renovation in the 1960s at the hands of legendary boat craftsman Les Allen, based in Oldbury. Although much of the outer timberwork has been replaced over the years, there is still a substantial proportion of the original in place. However major work on Lady Hatherton is now required in order to keep this unique craft afloat. The current owners, Hal and Susie Bagot, are considering the formation of a new ownership structure in order to ensure the future of this historic boat, which has recently joined the National Register of Historic Vessels. Anyone who would like to be involved should contact owner, Hal Bagot (halbagot@levenshall.co.uk). During the weekend visitors will be able to learn about the Lady Hatherton directly from Hal Bagot and, if they wish, to discover how they can become involved in helping to secure her future.

British Waterways volunteers will also be on hand to show visitors around the tiny living quarters of the heritage work boat ‘Swift’, learning what it was like to live and work on a canal boat. Stourport Forward volunteers will be available at the newly refurbished Tontine Stable Heritage Room and to talk about the ‘Window on the Past’ at the Old Ticket Office Heritage Room which gives a tangible impression of how the basins may have appeared when Stourport was a busy working canal port.

The Heritage Rooms are staffed by volunteers from Stourport Forward and Stourport Civic Society, while educational visits are being developed by Stourport Forward working with Bewdley Museum and ‘Wild Over Waterways’ (WOW), a partnership of British Waterways, The Waterways Trust and The Inland Waterways Association.

STOURPORT CANAL HUB UNVEILS “WINDOW ON THE PAST” AS KEY TO THE FUTURE

Stourport Canal Basins are firmly back on the map thanks to a major heritage initiative that is transforming the site into an interactive attraction for local people and visitors alike.

On Friday 19th March Stourport Forward and partners gave a preview of the latest developments at Stourport - on - Severn, as part of the plan to develop the town’s Historic Canal Basins as a major heritage tourism attraction.

Councillor John Holden, Mayor of Stourport, cut a ribbon to open the newly refurbished Tontine Stable Heritage Room and unveiled the “Window on the Past” at the Old Ticket Office which shows how the Basins may have appeared when Stourport was a busy working canal port. Representatives of the project partners were treated to a preview of the latest developments which will be fully open to the public for the first time on site from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Easter Sunday.

The latest developments include the creation of The Old Ticket Office as a Heritage Room, providing information about the Basins and the growth of the town, and the refurnishing of The Tontine Stable Heritage Room which contains displays about the history of the Basins and some of the animals that worked there. The Heritage Rooms will gradually be staffed by volunteers from Stourport Forward and Stourport Civic Society and details of the opening times will soon be available on this website.

Educational visits to Stourport Canal Basins are currently being developed through a project with Bewdley Museum and British Waterways. The launch also celebrated the creation of materials for these visits namely a Stourport Basins Fact File and Trail and four education resource boxes.

The event culminated in the launch of the new events and activities programme for 2010, made possible by the small group of dedicated volunteers formed last year. The programme includes Easter at Stourport Canal Basins, a May Heritage Weekend, a Pirates Weekend in August, Heritage Open Days Weekend in September and a Halloween Weekend.

These developments have been funded through a substantial grant from Advantage West Midlands in addition to grants from Wyre Forest District Council, Worcestershire County Council and Stourport Civic Society. Considerable support from British Waterways, Stourport Town Council, Bewdley Museum, other partners and a committed core team of volunteers has assisted in developing and delivering the project. The design of the Heritage Rooms has been led by local firm “Ice House” working with “The Bank” with support from partners and volunteers.

Pauline Annis, Chair of Stourport Forward, said that the new Heritage Rooms, Education project and Events Programme will usher in a bright new future for the attraction which will be the jewel in the crown of the local waterway network.

“This is a preview of our brand new season, which gets underway with our Easter event on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th April, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. when the new Heritage Rooms will be opened to the public for the first time. The Easter event will also include a chance to go inside the living quarters of a British Waterways Heritage Working Boat, canal boat trips from Stourport Basins and a costumed guided walk on Easter Sunday and Monday.

At Last - Father Christmas Comes To Stourport Canal Basins!!!

Father Christmas has agreed to visit Stourport Canal Basins on Sunday 13th and Sunday 20th December and is looking forward to meeting local children and their parents. However as he will only be available in the Heritage Room for a limited time parents will need to book an appointment to see him in advance.

The Windlass Café/Restaurant have agreed to book the appointments (tel: 01299 871742) and, together with volunteers from Stourport Forward, are busy preparing for Father Christmas’ arrival. Parents and children must book their ticket in advance and all children MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Tickets cost £6.90 for one adult and one child – this includes a hot drink and mince pie for the adult and a glass of squash and present for the child. Tickets for additional children cost £4.00 (which includes a glass of squash and a present) and all prices include VAT.

On arrival, at their agreed time, children (and parents) will be greeted by Stourport Forward volunteers and invited to listen to a short story with “The Storyteller” before going to see Father Christmas (in groups of up to 5 children) in The Old Stable Heritage Room, where they will spend around 5 to 10 minutes with Father Christmas.

Three local groups have kindly offered to sing some Christmas Carols during the event, however during the “Carol Singing Sessions” children will need to wait before they can visit “The Storyteller”.  Some members of Great Witley Operatic Society will open the event with a short carol service on Sunday 13th December at 11.00 a.m.  and some members of “Cantorus” will also sing some carols at 2.00 p.m. To close the event a small group of Carol Singers from The Parish Church of St Michael and Stourport High School will sing some carols on Sunday 20th December at 3.00 p.m.

Pauline Annis, Acting Chair, Stourport Forward, said “We are delighted that Father Christmas has agreed to visit Stourport Canal Basins this year.  When we told our volunteers they were all very keen to help! We are very excited and will be preparing The Old Stable Heritage Room for Father Christmas, where he will be able to briefly meet the children and their parents, after they have enjoyed a drink and a short story at The Windlass. “

27th January 2009

Work is underway on an ambitious project to transform an old workshop and stable building at the heart of Stourport’s historic canal basins into a stylish café-restaurant, office and heritage information centre.

The project is being funded with the help of a £500,000 grant from regional development agency Advantage West Midlands to the Stourport Forward Market Towns Initiative (MTI).

Conversion work, which is being carried out by Stourport-based company Thomas Vale Construction, will be completed by the Spring - and Stourport Forward is now starting the search for prospective tenants to lease the café-restaurant and kitchen from April 1, 2009.

The award-winning project will put the finishing touches to a £4.5 million programme of restoration and enhancement in Stourport funded by British Waterways, Advantage West Midlands through Stourport Forward MTI and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Other partners include Worcestershire County Council, Wyre Forest District Council, Stourport Town Council and Arts Council England.

Colin Hughes, chairman of Stourport Forward, said: “The Georgian splendour of Stourport Basins is the perfect setting for a café/restaurant and heritage room. While these are difficult times for the economy, this is a marvellous business opportunity. Stourport’s canal basins are enjoying a renaissance and are sure to attract new visitors in 2009 at a time when people are looking for more affordable leisure opportunities and quality places to eat closer to home.”

Tony Hyde, managing director at Thomas Vale Construction, said the company had a 140-year history of working in the area and had wide experience of restoring listed buildings using the latest heritage restoration techniques. He added: “We are extremely proud to be involved in this phase of the redevelopment of the Stourport Basins.”

Phil Roberts, partnerships director at Advantage West Midlands, said: “Developing and investing in our market towns is absolutely essential for the development of our region. Market towns are vital hubs and provide crucial services for the communities they serve – and Stourport is undoubtedly one of our success stories and shows how partners can work together to deliver regeneration.”

Prospective tenants for the café/restaurant should contact Liz Durnell, Stourport Forward programme manager on  0791 732 656 or Phipps and Pritchard on 01299 822060 for further information.

In addition to the heritage information room, which will be adjacent to the café-restaurant, there are also plans to develop events and activities to bring the basins to life by drawing on the history of the town as a canal port.

These include costume guided walks, developed by the Monday Night Group and Civic Society, and heritage weekends. Potential volunteers to assist with these new projects should also contact Stourport Forward’s programme manager.

A Stourport Forward project to transform a former workshop and stable building in Stourport's canal basin into a café/restaurant, office and heritage information point has secured £585,000 funding, it was announced today (Friday).

Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands has made the investment as the latest stage of the ongoing transformation of Stourport since the formation of Stourport Forward through the Market Towns Initiative in 2004. Fundamental to this has been the restoration of the canal basin through a major project by British Waterways.

To celebrate the transformation of the basins, the free family-orientated 'Flow Festival' is taking place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July, which will showcase the revamped area in all its glory The festival will also include two evening performances of 'The Devil's Tale', a show set to be a visual extravaganza full of music, colour and excitement for the whole family to enjoy. Phillip Roberts, Advantage West Midlands Partnerships Director, said: "This project will effectively put the finishing touches to the canal basin redevelopment. It will provide a visitor facility and significantly increase the quality of Stourport's tourism offer. Stourport is undoubtedly one of the success stories to come from the Market Towns Initiative and shows how partners can work together to deliver regeneration."

Julie Conder, Acting Chair, Stourport Forward, said: "This is part of a wider project to provide facilities, events and activities to attract additional heritage visitors to the basins and town and to continue the work of Stourport Forward, with all our partners, to enhance and develop this picturesque historic Georgian Canal Town."

Tony Harvey, General Manager for British Waterways West Midlands said: "This funding will no doubt add to the regeneration of Stourport Canal Basins and their surroundings, and help to bring them back into full, vibrant, sustainable use."

Cllr John Campion, Leader of the Council, said: "This is great news. The Stourport Basin project is a fantastic example of partnership working at its very best."
